The pattern

Give the market a generous public room. A wide street supports trading and gathering. Continuous limestone frontages and varied eaves enclose it, with a small open hall as a focus.

Keep the frontage narrow and the holding deep. Each address connects to a much longer strip of land. Side passages bring access to workshops, yards and productive gardens without interrupting the street with broad gaps.

Let the backland stay open. Low outbuildings give way to planting. A rear lane serves the ends of the plots and connects them to the town.
